The Marching Band (En fanfare)

TWO WORLDS THAT MUSIC JOINS

Director Emanuel Courcol already made a film, A Triumph with Kad Merad. His third feature film, probably his most accomplished, features actors little known in Argentina.

Thibaut (Benjamin Lavernhe) is a world-renowned conductor who learns he has leukemia and that only a bone marrow transplant can possibly save his life.

Ingeniously, the plot leads him to discover (including a DNA test) that his sister isn’t really leukemia, but that she has a compatible brother, whom he eventually contacts and asks to undergo the delicate operation that will allow her to survive.

Jimmy (Pierre Lottin) is initially reluctant to believe they have a family connection. Unlike Thibaut, he comes from a humble background and works in a canteen at a mining company in northern France. He’s a member of a very out-of-tune band (fanfare) where he plays the trombone. After agreeing to the delicate operation to help his brother, he rewards him with a wind instrument to replace the old one he plays in the band.

But Thibaut also discovers that Jimmy has great musical talent and perfect pitch, and convinces him to replace him when the director of “la fanfare” decides not to continue.

Courcol’s great quality is his ability to move the audience without resorting to cheap shots.

For classical music lovers, there’s also the chance to hear great works like Beethoven’s Egmont Overture in one of the first scenes where the music director rehearses with his orchestra, much to the satisfaction of music lovers.

The stark contrast with the inexperience of the band’s performers creates more than one situation that borders on the comical, but also a depiction of two distinct social realities, where music acts as a true connecting vessel.

These worlds each have the opportunity to aspire to success. In Thibaut’s case, he premieres a musical work, a product of his creativity. And the other will be a regional competition, where Jimmy will have to compete for a prize against other musical groups from the same region, in a contest that initially appears unfavorable.
